AR-15 Style Short Barrel Rifles
Caliber & Barrel Lengths

As I was filling out a BATFE Form 1 to register a lower receiver to become a short barrel rifle (SBR), I decided to start compiling a list of the possible calibers and barrel lengths that could potentially become a SBR on a AR style platform firearm.  This data was compiled by visiting various retailers and manufacturers websites along with looking at the latest issue of Shotgun News.  I'm sure I may have missed some caliber and barrel lengths, and if so, please send an email to editor@gunsumerreports.com with a link to where I can see the barrel and I will include it in the list below.  In some cases I may have identified a manufacturer like Spike's Tactical, but the barrel is actually made by Lothar-Walther.  I chose to fill out the table this way because the actual barrel manufacturer may not have provided detailed information on barrel lengths.  I'm not sure if you can purchase every barrel I have shown by itself, so it may be part of a complete upper assembly package.   Also in some cases, the barrel length may be a LMT MRP (monolithic rail platform) replacement and I have identified them with an asterisk (*).  Last, some of the barrel lengths may be identified as "pistol" barrels by the manufacturer.

 

The list below clearly identifies some important barrel lengths (i.e. 7.5", 10.5", 11.5", 14.5") which gives you the greatest number of potential manufacturers to chose from when purchasing a barrel for your 5.56 NATO SBR.
